一寸(いっすん)の虫(むし)にも五分(ごぶ)の魂(たましい)
どんな弱小なものにも、それ相応の意地や考えがあって、ばかにしてはいけないということのたとえ。
「通用しないとは僕の口から断定したくない。僕だって一寸の虫に五分の魂はある」
「一寸」と「五分」で語調を整えたものですが、文字どおりには魂が身体の半分となり、魂の大きさを強調する表現となっています。
Their dictionary suggests same as English phrase "Even a worm will turn" (which I've never heard).
But, that phrase has a negative meaning, it seems.
