ぎっしり VS びっしり

It was suggested that ぎっしり was more appropriate than びっしり when referring to crowds of people.
So, さてはさては、what's the (微妙なはずの） difference between the two?
My guess is one is for people and one is for objects...? Then again, ぎっしり was new to me.
