After discovering the English phrase "royal road" in a c.1905 bilingual English-Japanese thesaurus, I found the word "王道" (おうどう).
Is 王道 in use as a word in Japan?
If so, do most Japanese associate "おうどう" with the first definition, which is presumably the original meaning of the two kanji 王 and 道, or do people commonly think of it as the Japanese translation of "royal road" (definition 2)?
おう‐どう 〔ワウダウ〕 【王道】
１ 儒教で理想とした、有徳の君主が仁義に基づいて国を治める政道。⇔覇道(はどう)。
２ 《royal roadの訳語》安易な方法。近道。「学問に―無し」
First, that first defintion:
じゅ‐きょう 〔‐ケウ〕 【儒教】 Confucianism
孔子が唱えた道徳・教理を体系化したもの。その学問内容を儒学という。儒教は、その国家教学としての規範性・体系性を強調した称。→儒学
Part of Confucianism... Opposite of 覇道(はどう) (military rule, apparently.)
... a virtuous monarch ruling justly? = opposite of military rule; monarchal rule?
