軸足 じくあし

2013年07月29日

バレーの話だけど、 「軸足」という単語は英語の「dominant leg」っぽい。dominant(支配的?)は足だけじゃなく、手のことを表す場合にも使える。例えば、「左利き、それとも右利き?」って聞かれたら 「My left hand is my dominant hand.」とも答えられる。

ネットからの例文:「If my dominant hand is right, what will be my dominant leg? 」・・「There aren't any rules for that. I'm right handed, but I turn left better, and my left leg is more flexible and stronger.」

ところで、「Are you left handed or right handed?」はほかの言い方で、「Which (hand) is your dominant hand?」となる。

expectations OF vs FOR

2013年01月29日
They have slightly different meanings. The first means that your parents will feel let down if you don't come up to what they expect ['of' you], whilst the second means that because of your abilities they will be quite unsurprised if you do not do well.
---
Your parents have high expectations OF you. (a level of performance expected of your actions)
Your parents have great expectations FOR you. (hopes for your future)

Hope that helps.
